Surf spots you can reach by scooter from Kuta Lombok

Kuta Lombok sits in the middle of one of the best stretches of surf coast in Indonesia. With a scooter and a surf rack you can check three or four breaks in a morning and be in the water wherever it is working.

Riding times below start at our shop on Jl. Raya Kuta. Surf conditions change with swell, wind and tide – ask the local surf schools for the day's call, and ask us for the road.

1. Gerupuk

20 minutes eastBeginner to advanced

A big bay with several breaks – Inside, Outside, Kid's Point and Don Don – reached by a short boat ride from the harbour. Something works on most swells, which makes it the daily go-to for Kuta surfers.

Scooter tip: Park in the village near the harbour and agree the boat price before you get in.

2. Seger

5 minutes eastIntermediate

Reef breaks right next to Kuta and Mandalika. Paddle out from the beach – no boat needed – but watch the reef on lower tides.

Scooter tip: Closest spot to town, perfect for a quick session before breakfast.

3. Selong Belanak

45 minutes westBeginner

A long sandy beach with soft, rolling waves and board rental on the sand. The place most people in Lombok take their first surf lesson.

Scooter tip: The coastal road climbs through hills – with a board and a passenger take a 125cc or bigger.

4. Are Guling

30 minutes westIntermediate

A quieter bay west of Kuta with a reef break and a much smaller crowd than Gerupuk.

Scooter tip: The last section of the access road is rough – ride it slowly with a board on.

5. Mawi

50 minutes westAdvanced

A powerful reef break with strong currents and a sharp reef. Spectacular when it works, not a place to learn.

Scooter tip: Pay the small parking fee at the top and walk the last stretch down to the beach.

6. Ekas (Inside & Outside)

1.5 hours eastIntermediate to advanced

Two breaks at the mouth of Ekas Bay, usually reached by boat from the Ekas side. Fewer people and a real surf-trip feeling.

Scooter tip: A long ride with rough sections – leave early, fill the tank in Kuta and consider the Honda ADV 160.

Riding with a surf rack

  • We fit the rack on the side that suits your board and check it is tight before you ride.
  • Fin facing backwards and down, nose slightly forward – it catches less wind.
  • Ride slower than usual and leave extra room on the rack side, especially in village streets.
  • Crosswinds are strongest on the open coastal road west of Kuta – hold the bars firmly.
  • Lock the board to the rack or take it with you when you park at the beach.

The rack is free on every scooter. For the hilly runs west of Kuta pick a Honda Vario 125 or bigger – see our scooter comparison. Staying for the whole season? Ask about monthly rental.

FAQ

Surfing Lombok by scooter – FAQ

Yes. In Kuta Lombok almost every surfer uses a side surf rack. At BADY we fit one free of charge on any scooter in our fleet – just tell us your board length when you book on WhatsApp.

Seger, about five minutes east of Kuta village next to Mandalika, is the closest. Gerupuk, the most popular surf area around Kuta, is about twenty minutes east by scooter, with a short boat ride from the harbour to the breaks.

Selong Belanak is the classic beginner beach, about 45 minutes west of Kuta by scooter, with soft waves over sand and surf schools on the beach. Inside Gerupuk is also popular for lessons on smaller days.

For Seger and Gerupuk any scooter with a surf rack is fine, even a Honda Vario 110. For the hilly coastal road west to Selong Belanak, Are Guling and Mawi, a Honda Vario 125 or Yamaha NMAX 155 handles the extra weight and wind resistance of a board much better.

Yes, if you ride slower than usual and leave extra space on the side of the rack. Crosswinds on the open coastal road and narrow village streets are the main things to watch. Strap the board tight, keep the fin facing backwards and avoid riding after dark.
